Happy Sunday everyone! For my Canadian friends, I hope you had a wonderful Canada Day and for all my US friends, I hope Independence Day was full of fun and fireworks!
It’s Sunday so you know what that means here at 4 You With Love, it’s “Spices 101”. Today we’re going to talk about Onion Powder.
What is onion powder?
Onion powder made by grinding dehydrated onions. Keep in mind that is lacks much of the nutritional benefits of fresh onions and doesn’t add any texture.
How pungent is it?
Onion powder isn’t as pungent as fresh onions but it is a huge time saver.
Why use onion powder instead of onions?
It is great for those times when you don’t have any onions or you don’t have the time to peel and chop an onion. Also, some people experience digestive discomfort form onions, like heartburn. Onion powder can be a way for those individuals to still enjoy the flavor of onion in their recipes without experiencing any digestive distress.
How to substitute onion powder in a recipe.
1 tsp onion powder = 1/3 cup chopped onion (small onion) =1 Tbsp onion flakes
How I use onion powder.
My husband and youngest are not fans of raw onions. As a result, I use onion powder when making salads that call for raw onion (like seafood salad). Also, I like using onion powder when making spice blends like my DIY Taco Seasoning.
This month I’ll be sharing some recipes and spice blends that use onion powder so stop back and find some onion powder inspirations!
