When I was a little kid, about 6, I remember making paper baskets and paper flowers for May Day. I would run “stealthfully” (which probably meant giggling so loudly everyone could hear me) to the neighbor’s house, leave the flowers on the doorstep, ring the doorbell and run away. I usually hid behind a bush so I could witness their reaction. They would always smile and never let on that they knew it was me. However, I’m sure they knew it was me…how much finesse does a 6 year old really have?
Well, I haven’t made a May Day basket in a very long time. The other day, I found these beautiful flowers and I had an “A-HA” moment.
It’s been a long winter here in Ohio and I thought some of my friends might like a surprise that they can plant in their gardens….a living May Day basket! Here’s what I did.
- I took a plastic cup and using a hole punch, punched two holes at the top (I need to be able to hang this goodie on their door knob).
- I then used some washi tape to decorate my “basket”.
- My flowers were in a 3-pack so I divided the flowers and then planted them into three “baskets” with some potting soil.
- I then added some bakers twine so I could hang my surprises on my friends’ doors.
Now, I just hope my “stealth skills” are better than when I was 6! Here’s to a wonderful May Day and a long and beautiful spring! Oh, and this one is for you!
