Spirit Mondays #3 – DIY Team Coffee Mug

Pinterest is such a great place to find inspiration, don’t you think?  One of the ideas that I’ve seen floating around is decorating porcelain with sharpie markers and then baking it to set the ink.  I was at Goodwill and found a couple of white porcelain mugs for just $0.25 each so I just had to try this out.
Here’s one of my mugs along with the sharpie marker I used.
As many of you know, my daughter is a member of Ohio University’s marching band:  the Marching 110.  So I decided to make this mug for her.  Here’s where I started.
When, I completed all the decorating I wanted to do, I cooked the mug in a 350 degree F oven for 30 minutes.  I let it cool completely.  Once it had cooled, I washed it in warm soapy water with a simple sponge.  The ink did not come off!
Here’s the final product from the front.

Here’s the other side of my completed mug (one of their “cheers”).

This is a simple and inexpensive project you can make for that sports fan.  A recommendation/hint if giving this as a gift.

  • I have heard things on the internet that this can wash off in the dishwasher.  Others have not had luck when they use a “scrubbie” when hand washing.  This being said, I would write a note on the bottom of the mug that states, “hand wash only with a sponge or soft rag”.

I made plates the other day. I wasn’t happy with it. My colors were dull and it washed off after one wash (in the sink)! I think I’m going to try some ceramic markers next time.
