Good morning, everyone! I’m back after a day of helping my daughter with her first apartment search. It was a very full day with a lot of emotional highs and lows. All in all it was a great day!
Anyway, I’m here to share inspiration no. 9: my first adventure into grilling watermelon. I have seen a lot of people raving about grilled watermelon on the web so I just had to give it a try. However, my first try at grilling watermelon ended up as an epic fail!
You’re probably asking, “What do you mean? How did it fail?” Well, let me share a little with you.
I first started off by salting my watermelon pieces for 20 minutes to help remove some of the excess water (most sites recommended this step). Then I rinsed the salt off and placed the pieces on a (doubled) paper towel lined cookie sheet. I also patted the tops dry with additional paper towels. I prepared a marinade (lime, agave nectar, olive oil, black pepper) and brushed it onto the watermelon pieces.
So far so good. Well, I had been grilling some other items and my grill wasn’t any where near hot enough to grill the watermelon.
Look at these grilled watermelon pieces from Sugar Laws with the beautiful grill marks! (You can find the complete post HERE).
And here is my watermelon fail once again.
Pretty pathetic, huh? Well let me tell you, my husband was skeptical when I said I was going to try grilling watermelon and this attempt did NOT change his mind.
I’ll try this again which is why I am sharing this with you as inspiration no. 9. Grilling is a really fun way to cook, especially in the summer and this June I’ve been trying to share with you ways to get creative on the grill. Experiment, take chances, get messy. I would say that 95% of the time you will create something amazing and about 5% of the time you will say, “Not again!” But that’s okay…you still got an “A”! So keep on grilling!
I’ll see you at 3:00 with inspiration no. 10!

Good for you for persevering! And for trying something new! I wouldn’t have ever considered grilled watermelon… but despite the lack of sear marks, was it tasty?

I’m with you…try it again! I’m pretty sure there is no bad watermelon and although I have not tried grilling it, I want to!
