Now, to find colors and the perfect product for the transformation. Home Depot carries this amazing line of Chalky Finish Chalk Paint by Americana Decor. Let me tell you, this product is absolutely AMAZING! I didn’t have to prime my piece and the paint adhered beautifully. Oh, and the colors that you can chose from is so extensive and the price is very reasonable. (Go HERE to see all the products available at Home Depot.) I chose to use the colors Treasure & Lacy along with using some Creme Wax.
Now, as I said earlier, I didn’t have to prime my project. Just be sure to clean your unit very well to remove dust and any grime. It took 2 coats of Treasure to cover the unit completely.
Now to help with the distressing, I rubbed a candle along the edges of the shelves and my unit. Anywhere I would like to have the blue peek through.
It is now time to paint the top color on. Once again, it took two coats to completely cover my unit.
Once the paint is thoroughly dry, take a piece of sand paper and distress your piece. Once you’ve achieved the look you like, apply a coat of creme wax to seal you piece.
Okay, here’s my completed piece waiting to be transported home.
I placed it in my Woman Cave and filled it with sock yarn. (Socks are one of my favorite things to knit!) Doesn’t it look amazing?
I must admit it, I am totally in love! What do you think?
My unit stands 4 feet tall and as you can see, I used all of the white paint and had very little blue paint left. When I do this project again, I would purchase a 16 ounce jar of my top color!
Tips & Reviews:
- This paint goes on so incredibly smoothly and easily with NO brush strokes! Clean up was also a breeze. It also leaves a wonderfully flat finish…..gorgeous! I would definitely use Chalky finish paint again.
- I would not remove the individual shelves from the unit. This paint is very thick and I had a difficult time placing some of the shelves back into my unit. In fact, I had to repaint a few places but I didn’t have any white left….that is why you see a blue block in one picture.
- The creme wax was super easy to use as well.
