If you haven’t noticed, I absolutely LOVE cooking with spices….all sorts of spices. Thankfully my family loves flavorful food and supports me with all my crazy cooking experiments. There’s just one down side to all of this.
Okay, wait, let me be honest, there may only be one downside but it can be an ugly. Are you ready? Tons of spices in a cabinet that is totally in disarray. OMG tons of spices. I have to dig through so much to be able to find the spice(s) I’m looking for. Not pretty.
Well, a couple of months ago I shared a round-up of spice organizing ideas to get everyone, including me…well especially me, to get their spice cabinets under control. You can see that post HERE. I loved many of those ideas but nothing clicked. Then I had an “A-HA” moment. Look what I came up with.
Spice File Box
What do you think? I must admit, I’m pretty stoked. As you know, my favorite spice company is MySpiceSage. Although they have an option to purchase their spices in bottles, I always purchase mine in the plastic bags. Here’s my set of Party Thyme’s Summer Thyme spices for 2013 (1 oz each). See how these bags could take over a cabinet?
Well, I was at Michael’s a few weeks ago and they had their photo storage boxes on sale for 6/$10…yup! Just $1.66 each!
Now, look at how well the 1 oz. bags of spices from MySpiceSage fit in this box! Pretty snazzy, if I do say so myself!
Now, I just needed to make some dividers. I decided to have mine not only have the name of the spice at the top, they also include my blurb from Spices 101! So, not only can you easily find the spice you’re looking for, you can also refresh your memory on how to use it!
So, here’s the inside of my box. I decided to place the filing card behind each spice. Why? Well, that’s so the first card doesn’t press right up against the front of the box, making it virtually impossible to read.
Now, just a little washi tape and a label in the front and there you have it, my new spice file box!
Now the hardest part of this project was making the spice dividers. If you’ld like to use the same ones I did, you’re in luck! I’ve got them here for you to download.

So what do you think of my spice filing system? How do you organize your spices? If you do like this idea, I just wanted you to know I’ll be creating spice cards to share with you at the end of “Autumn Thyme”.
