What are things that make you swoon? Okay, let me be more specific. Name a crafting tool that you would LOVE to have but the price tag keeps you from taking the plunge and purchasing it. Don’t say it out loud just yet. Oh, I told you to keep quiet too late, didn’t I? Well, I’ll tell you my dream crafting tool…
A Silhouette Cameo or Portrait
Okay now tell me a website that has some amazing things but when you see the price you say, “no way!” Mine is….
anthropologie.com
Well, today’s post is about these two things. First, I want to share with you something on anthropologie.com that I think would be a great addition to a kitchen: Theses chalkboard spice jars.
I like that the jars are opaque so that light doesn’t come in and destroy the contents but more importantly, I LOVE how the lids are fun colors and the chalkboard labels allow you to change the label as the contents change. However, these little cuties are $10 and $12 EACH! Talk about an expensive organizing solution!
I read through the comments and someone said, “I wish they made these in larger jars”. Hmmmm that got me to thinking. I really liked the idea of making a large storage jar based on these little guys. So I went on a jar quest.
While I was thinking about jars, I was then thinking about how I would make the chalk board labels. If I only had Silhouette machine! But the cost. Well, I began entering giveaways.
Yes, Silhouette Portrait giveaways! I have shared some of these on my Facebook Page before. Around the beginning or the end of each month, a lot of bloggers have a Silhouette Portrait Bundle Giveaway along with great deals on purchasing a Cameo or Portrait Bundle AND deals on a supply of the month.
Well, people, in July …….drumroll…..
I WON A SILHOUETTE PORTRAIT
Yes, it is possible to win one! Anyway, I collected jars, I have my dream machine, now it is time to complete my first vinyl cutting project. Here it is!
DIY Anthro Inspired Chalk Board Storge Jars
What do you think? My daughter recently moved into her first apartment and her kitchen colors are yellow and grey so hence, I made my knockoffs with yellow lids. Here’s how you can make your own!
First you have to find the jars you’d like. I thought the spice jars looks a lot like baby food jars. So, after looking at the jars I have these coconut oil jars from Costco looked like winners. I just needed to remove the label. I have the neatest trick for removing labels that I’ll share with you in another post.
Next you will need to spray paint your jar. I chose this Krylon paint for plastic that dries in 15 minutes. I’m too impatient for paints that have a long dry time…how about you? Now you may be wondering why I have a piece of blue painter’s tape on my jar. Well, since the jar will be opaque, I wanted a way for my daughter to be able to look to check to see how much is left without having to open the jar…pretty clever, eh?
I find it works best when spray painting objects if they are raised off the “ground”. To accomplish this, I inverted my jar on top of another can of spray paint. To avoid drips, spraying a few light coats rather than one heavy coat works best. Also, between coats , invert your spray paint can and spray…this will remove the paint from the nozzle and keep it from clogging.
You will need to spray paint your lids as well. See, mine are sitting on top of cans of diced tomatoes!
I then used my Portrait to cut out my chalk board labels from vinyl from a past Pick Your Plum Daily Deal. Now, I apologize that I didn’t take pictures of this step. I was so excited about creating my first project that I totally forgot to take pictures….I will next time!
So, what do you think? I made 4 jars for approximately $5, better than the cost or $10-$12 each don’t you think?
Now I have something else exciting to share with you. Lauren Lanker of The Thinking Closet creates an amazing Facebook Group called “The Silhouette Challenge”. The idea behind this group is to use your Silhouette each month in a different way. I think this is awesome because, let’s be honest, how many times have you been all excited to get some sort of crafting machine, you use it once or twice, and then in the closet it goes? I bet this has happened more than once!
Well, when I got my Portrait, I joined and this is my first challenge project. If you own a Silhouette and you’d like to join, simply send Lauren an email. Also, would you like to get additional inspiration for either (a) your Silhouette or (b) to justify purchasing a machine? Check out the other projects bloggers have completed this month.
