We have a restaurant here in Delaware, Ohio called Amato’s Wood Fired Pizza. Their pizza is amazing. You walk in and they have this huge wood fired pizza oven that creates the most amazing pizza. I’ve been telling my husband that in my dream home I want one of those wood fired ovens….well no need now! You can get that same deliciousness by making pizza on your backyard grill!
Now, I’m not pulling your leg. Trust me! It’s easy and oh so yummy. So, for inspiration no. 7, I’m going to share how you too can make a pizza on your grill. First, a couple of pictures to get your mouth watering!
Doesn’t this look amazing? My daughter told me that she’s going to get a grill for her apartment just so she can make grilled pizza!
Okay, enough drooling. Let’s get to making our pizza!
Pizza Dough Ingredients (enough dough to make 2 pizzas):
- 1 cup warm (NOT hot) water. (It should feel warm on your inner wrist)
- 1 package (1 Tbsp) yeast
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 cups flour (plus additional for rolling and kneading)
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp granulated/powdered garlic
- 1 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/2 tsp salt
- Cheese (I prefer to use fresh mozzarella)
- Olive Oil
- Cooked meats (like pepperoni)
- Vegetables (like fresh tomatoes)
Prep your grill for hot/warm cooking. If using a charcoal grill, do this by banking the majority of your goals to one side to create a hot cooking area. Then, have a thin layer on the other side of your grill to create a warm cooking area.
Roll out your dough and then place on the hot side of your grill. Grill about 30 seconds or until the dough begins to bubble. Then with your tongs, turn the dough a quarter turn and grill an additional 30 seconds.
Flip your dough over onto the warm side of your grill and working quickly, brush on some olive oil.
Next, sprinkle on some of your spice blend.
Now it’s time to add some toppings. I was going for a margherita pizza but my hubby wanted some pepperoni as well so on it went.
Next add some of your cheese. Cheese lovers, do not overload your pizza. If you add TONS of cheese, you’ll end up with a melted cheesy mess!
Finally, we added some fresh sliced tomatoes. When you are finished adding toppings, place your grill lid onto the grill and cook until your cheese has melted. This took us about 4 minutes and our grill lid has a thermometer which read 400 Degrees F when the cheese was good a gooey.
My youngest didn’t want tomatoes on his pizza so here’s his simple pepperoni pizza.

Mmm this does look yummy! I have never tried to grill pizza before but it looks like I need to give it a go!

This looks divine! And thank you for the cheese tip – I’m always overloading my pizzas with cheese. I’m a lactose-lover!
I’ll let you know when I try this. It’s raining today (boo!), but when the sun comes out, I’m making grilled pizza!
