There’s something about summer time that makes it a great time for crafting. Is it the sunshine? Is it the longer days? Is it the warmer weather? I don’t know what it is but I know not only am I more creative, but my kids are too!
If you are looking for great ways to craft with kids, look no farther than JoAnn’s 72 Featured Cape Discovery Craft Projects. My daughter and I looked through all of the projects and thought the Crayon Melt Canvas Project looked like fun. Here’s what we made.
I think one of the beauties of this project is that is is truly creative with no “specific” outcome. You can’t go wrong with this project….just let the colors flow. Here’s how we made ours.
- 11×14 canvas (or whatever size you choose)
- Watercolors & brushes
- 2 packages of 24 crayons
- Scrapbooking butterfly paper punches (or other shape of your choosing)
- Colored paper
- Hot glue gun & glue
The first thing you will do is paint your canvas.
- Make sure you let the water sit on the water color longer for more paint with more pigment
- Take a paint brush and just randomly paint streaks of color
- Use a foam brush dipped in water to spread your paint streaks to completely cover your canvas
- Add a few additional streaks of colors for a more interesting canvas (we added red and purple)
Use a glue gun and hot glue your crayons on one edge of your canvas. You can remove the crayon wrappers but we decided to keep them on.
Use a blow dryer and melt your crayons. (Note: to get more drips, point your dryer more toward the body of your crayons and not at the crayon tips.)
Use your paper punch to punch out butterflies from your colored paper.
Glue the butterflies onto your canvas for a whimsical look.
Here’s the finished work of art. Isn’t it fun?
