I don’t know about you but one of the things I really don’t like about summer is Mosquitos! They really put a damper on all your outdoor activities…especially your evening gatherings. You can light citronella candles, apply mosquito repellent but what about repelling mosquitos in a natural way…with plants!
As I do with most things today, if I have a question, I search the internet. Some of the plants I found that are great for repelling mosquites include: citronella, catnip, rosemary, marigolds, lemon balm and the “mosquito plant” (which I believe is a member of the geranium family). When I was at my local nursery, I picked up a mosquito plant and some marigolds and thought I’d try to make a mosquito repelling planter. Here’s what I did.
These are the plants I purchased
I made my planter following these steps
1. I put rocks in the bottom of my pot for drainage.
2. I filled my pot half full with Moisture Control Potting Mix by Miracle-Gro
3. I arranged my plants in my pot and finished filling my pot with Moisture Control Potting Mix
Here’s my planter! I’m super excited to see if it really does repel mosquitos! I’ve never used a lot of fertilizers on my plants but MiracleGro has two different types that look like winners that I may just go out and try this year. They are LiquaFeed All Purpose Plant Food Advance Starter Kit andShake’n Feed All Purpose Plant Food.
Gardening is a great activity year round and a great activity to do with kids. If you are looking for some inspiration, Miracle Gro has tutorials for some really fun garden projects. I didn’t know that marigolds were mosquito repelling! I’m so happy that I put them in my patio planters now!
You’ll have to update how the mosquito plant does – I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those before!

I didn’t know marigolds naturally repelled mosquitoes!! That is so good to know! I’d love to hear how well this combination works out for you this year since we have similar weather (and similar mosquitoes, LOL)!

I put out some marigolds last summer for this very reason. They worked really well on my deck. As for the citronella, I’m still on the look out for the citronella grass which is different from this plant. I was reading online that with the grass, you could literally break off a piece and rub it on your skin for a repellant!

I didn’t realize marigolds would repel mosquitos. I haven’t found some of the other plants, but have wanted to make one of these for our patio. I get eaten up like crazy by those little bugs. Will have to try some marigolds!

Best thing about winter, no mosquitos. Gonna try this come spring time.
