Well, tomorrow is Mother’s Day and one of my memories of my mom is her in the garden. Talk about a green thumb! Growing up, she had beautiful flowers all around the house along with a vegetable garden that had tomato plants, I swear, that were 5 feet high!
One of the traditions we have in our home is we put our garden in on Mother’s Day. This is for two reasons. To honor my mom AND the threat of frost is usually finally gone by this time in Ohio. Although my thumb is more beige in color, rather than green, I do love the feel of dirt when preparing and planting the garden……except for the clean up afterwards. I am usually standing in front of the sink a LONG time trying to scrub off all the dirt from my hands and around my fingernails.
Last year I found a gardener’s hand scrub that worked well. The problem is that it was kinda pricey. Well, I was at Bath and Body Works the other day and they had their hand soaps on sale: 7 for $20 which turns out to be $2.85 each. I had one of my “A-HA” moments and grabbed some of their seasonal “Italian Lavender” along with their “Kitchen Lemon”. What was swirling around in my head? If you can make a body scrub with oils and sugar, why can’t you make a hand scrub with liquid soap and sugar? Well, you can and here’s how!
2 Ingredient Gardener’s Hand Scrub
Ingredients (makes approximately 1/2 cup of hand scrub):
1/3 cup of granulated sugar
approximately 2 fl oz of liquid hand soap
Directions:
Measure 1/3 cup sugar and place in a bowl.
Add enough liquid hand soap to create a solution that is no longer too grainy (I used approximately 1/4 of my B&BW bottle of soap)
I also typed up some labels on my printer and used the canning lids as templates.
Pour your scrub into a 4 oz. canning jar and secure with your lid, label, and band. I decided to make this recipe 3 more times for a total of 4 batches: 2 lavender and 2 lemon.
Easy peasy and you can change the scent based on your preferences. Just pick up a different soap scent. I also would think that this would work well with another liquid (gel) soap. I don’t think it would work with foaming soaps since they have a lot of water in them…..they would probably cause the sugar to dissolve.
So, whip up a batch for your mom, a teacher, special friend and yourself. It’s quick, easy, and very affordable!

This looks so easy. I’ll have to make some soon. I get my hands dirty digging in the dirt often, so this will be used a lot at my house. Thanks!
