Have you ever purchased a lamp because you need one. It works and is “okay” but that’s it? You look at it and it does provide light but it does nothing for the room…nothing good and nothing bad. It’s not on your “OMG, this really has to go” list so it just sits there. Well, that is this lamp here.
I got it from Target a while ago and it’s been a lamp. Yes, just a lamp. Well, when I received soome awesome HGTV home dec fabric, I knew it was time to give this lamp a makeover. Look at it today!
I think it has a lot more personality now, don’t you? Here’s a look at the transformation.
I firsts removed the shade, and wrapped the light fixtures pieces with plastic wrap.
I also put the lamp on top of 4 cans to raise the base off of the ground for easier painting.
I found this amazing paint on clearance at Wal-Mart. Notice what the can says….”Dries in 10 minutes”! I LOVE this because when you apply the paint in thin coats, you can re-coat quickly so your project doesn’t take all day. So I painted the frame: yes in thin coats to avoid the dreaded drips and I always turned my can upside down and sprayed to clean the nozzle).
Then I had to cover the shade. I used HGTV home dec fabric in Checkered Past – Berry.
Since my shade is rectangular, I first folded my fabric in half. Then I aligned my shade along the folded edge. I cut around my shade leaving a 1/2 seam allowance along all sides.
To adhere my fabric to my shade, I used this spray adhesive by Elmer’s Glue. I did this outside and there was a breeze so I sprayed the adhesive onto my shade and not onto the fabric. This is because I was afraid if the wind blew and caused the fabric to fold onto itself (glued piece onto glued piece) it would never come apart.
I sprayed adhesive onto one side of the shade and placed it onto the fabric. Be sure there are no wrinkles. Then spray the other side of the shade and the smoothed the rest of the fabric over the last side of the shade.
You will have some overlap of your fabric on the edge. Using a hot glue gun, fold over and glue down the edge onto itself. Then run a bead of hot glue on the shade and glue the folded edge onto the shade. This will create a finished edge.
Using your glue gun again, place a bead of hot glue onto the inside edge of your shade. Then fold up the edge of your fabric into the inside of your shade. Do this for both the top and bottom edges.
Slide your shade back into place. What a great new look! I think the has gone from drab to fab! How about you?
Here’s a closer look at the shade. I just love it!
Doesn’t this lamp go great with the director’s chair?
You can see how I made my new back and seat for this director’s chair here.
I have so much fabric left along with some amazing trim. Stop back next week to see more creations! Oh, and check my side bar for a 10% off coupon along with the dates you can get the HGTV home dec fabric line 50% off!

I’m guessing that the lamp part isn’t a great source of light but more of decor for the room. It doesn’t seem like it would put out a lot off light but it is pretty. =)
