I can’t believe how addicted I am to making my own lotions and potions. My daughter loves EOS lip balm and thinks my peppermint vanilla lip balm is very similar and my husband loves the “mounds bar” solid lotion bars. Today’s project was an expansion on my 3 ingredient body butter.
One of my all time favorite moisturizers is smoothing souffle whipped body cream from Origins. It is moisturizing with a light spearmint/peppermint scent. I absolutely LOVE the way it feels and smells. However, it costs $29.50 for 6.7 ounces! Yup, I said $29.50. Definitely a splurge. How would you like to be able to make 12 ounces for about $1.00!
Before I continue, I’d like to share a few things.
- I had been afraid to use olive oil previously because I didn’t want my body butter to have an olive-y smell. Also, virgin, unrefined coconut oil has a yummy coconut aroma and is pricey.
-
- If you purchase light olive oil, there is no olive-y aroma
- I found LouAnn coconut oil at Kroger for $6.99 for 31.5 fl oz and it is odor free.
- If you want a great unscented body cream, just omit the essential oils from my recipe.
Okay, are you ready? This is super simple and so incredible. You’ll be wondering why you haven’t been making your own body cream before now!
DIY Origins Smoothing Souffle Body Cream
Ingredients:
1/2 cup light olive oil
1/4 cup refined coconut oil
3 Tbsp beeswax
1 cup prepared white tea (or water)
10 drops each spearmint and peppermint essential oil (20 drops total)
These are your basic ingredients for an unscented body cream
These are the essential oils you need to create that yummy Origins aroma
Since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, I first measured the 1/2 cup olive oil in a 2 cup pyrex measuring cup. I then added the coconut oil to the measuring cup until the total oil measured 3/4 cup. Add the beeswax. Then microwave until all the ingredients have melted. (I started out microwaving on high for 1.5 minutes. Then I continued to microwave for 30 second intervals until the oil/wax mixture was completely melted).
Place the tea/water in a food processor fitted with the large blade. Turn your food processor on and VERY SLOWLY add the melted oil/wax to the tea/water….just drizzle it in. (for pictures of this step, go here).
Once you have added all the oil/wax mixture, remove the lid and scrape the sides down. If you are wanting that yummy Origins smell, add the peppermint and spearmint essential oils now.
Replace the lid and pulse a couple of times to blend the oils. This is how the cream looks when it is first finished (my tea was hot so my lotion was still warm).
Here it is 2 hours later once it has cooled. It is amazing: smooth with a soft mint smell.
I can’t tell you how psyched I am. This stuff is great and so inexpensive. A great body cream for the winter months. Now, I’m trying to figure out a way to make a lighter lotion for those warmer months. Oh, darn, I guess that means I need to do more experimentation! ????

I just whipped this up & it is perfect for a much needed soothing lotion. Thank you for sharing!!!! How long does this lotion last? Does it need refrigerated or added preservatives to make it last longer?
