February Revue

The online Miriam-Webster dictionary defines the word revue as "a theatrical production consisting typically of brief loosely connected often satirical skits, songs, and dances".  Well, you haven't seen me in any skits, sing any songs, or doing any dances...but I have been doing a lot of singing and dancing.  This has been a great month!

There has been some eating!

I have shared links to amazing ideas from linky parties along with Pinterest!  We've had a whirlwind of activity regard GFC, Linky Followers, Networked Blogs, and Blog Lovin.

We've even played a Table Manners Game for Kids

Earlier today I even shared with you the most amazing book ever!

Cupcakes, Cookies and Pie, Oh My

Thanks for following along with my crazy life!  I hope to have even more fun and excitement in March!

Cupcakes, Cookies, and Pie, Oh My

Do you have a couple of stores that are definitely tops on your "favorites" list?  I sure do.  One of them is definitely Costco!  They have high quality goods and very reasonable prices.

I was at Costco yesterday picking up some supplies for my husband's business along with items for home.  I took a stroll down the book section and saw the most amazing book:  "Cupcakes, Cookies and Pie, Oh My" by Karen Tack and Alan Richardson.  It has the most amazing ideas ever!  Take a look!

Isn't this gorgeous?

Rice Krispie houses...no need to bake gingerbread

Soda Shop, anyone?

Love these mini cake slices on a fork!

This could be a great treat for a "Chicken Run" party!  (my family loves Nick Park films!)

Looks so real, doesn't it!

My guys love pie so this twist on a hand held pie/turnover would be a bit hit!

A festive addition to next year's Thanksgiving!

This would be a fun treat to have at an Easter Egg Hunt party

Can a woman ever have to many pairs of shoes?

I have a dear friend whose hubby works in the bovine industry.  She would love this!

What a fun play on words "Pigs in a Blanket"  :D

New take on cookies and coffee/tea/cocoa!

Zombies!!

These puppies are so darn cute....Valentine's Day next year?

 Don't you love these guys?

No, not nachos...a cheesecake!  (My guys also adore cheesecake)

This is just a sampling of what the book has:  there's a whole lot more.  My daughter is a cupcake girl and my original plan was to give it to her for her birthday (she already owns "Hello Cupcake", and "What's New Cupcake", by the same authors).  However, upon further inspection, I think this one will go into my library!

If you like what you see, stop by your local book store and pick up a copy.  If you can't find it, I provided link to Amazon for your convenience.

Liebster Award

Last night was a crazy night.  "Why," you ask?  Well, before I went to bed I learned that Melissa from Serendipity and Spice had awarded me the Liebster Award.  What a way to end the day!  But when I woke up this morning I learned that Mariah from Mariah's Creations  along with Jeneen from Suzie HomeCaker had also awarded me this same honor!  I am speechless.

Now what is the Liebster Blog Award?  Liebster is German and means 'dearest' or 'beloved', but it can also mean 'favorite'. The idea behind the Liebster Award is to bring attention to blogs with less than 200 followers.  If you are selected, you need to:
  1. Choose FIVE up and coming blogs to award the Liebster to (they must have less than 200 followers)
  2. Show your thanks to the blogger who gave you the award by linking back to them.
  3. Post the award on your blog.
  4. List the bloggers you are giving this award to with links to their sites.
  5. Best of all, have fun and share the love!

Since I was honored more than once, I am going to bend the rules a bit and offer this award to 10 blogs.  Here they are.

  • The Weekly Stitch was one of my first followers and I love learning a new knitting stitch each week
  • Big Plans Little Victories just started in Jan 2012 but you can tell there are definitely some big plans for this blog.
  • Sarah of Dwell on Joy has tons of crafting ideas along with awesome photography (perhaps I'll take amazing pictures one day)
  • Jutta of Organized Living Solutions always leaves the most amazing comments that always make my day along with her amazing posts.
  • Crafty Nonsense Noted turned my head when author, Jessica, posted a Pottery Barn Knockoff that is awesome.
  • Julie of Crafty Imaginings has such creative ideas..check out her diy dragonfly.
  • I love beadboard but I've only seen it used on walls and ceilings so when Rachel of Adventures of a DIY Mom used it to make picture frames, I knew she was a creative lady.
  • Tori of Lil Mrs Crafty has some amazing sewing tutorials and just started her blog in February.
  • Another item I love is mason jars and Meg of Nutmeg place has an awesome tutorial using hose clamps and mason jars along with a great sense of humor.
  • A Rosie Sweet Home has a great mix of diy ideas from clay earrings to gel air freshener....love it all, Rose.
  • Rebekah of Accidentally Wonderful posts recipes and crafts that are easy and doable.

Choosing these blog was difficult because there are so many awesome up and coming blogs.  I also wanted to say that I also follow a lot of amazing blogs that have over 200 followers.

I guess what I am trying to say is, "Thanks for taking the time to read my blog and also for creating yours!"

GFC, Google+, Bloglovin...what to do?

Happy Sunday, everyone,

Before I address the topic of today's post, I wanted to let everyone know that auditions are open for American Crafter Season 4 until February 29, 2012.  Click HERE for more information.  I've entered and if you haven't you should!

Okay, now onto the Google Friends Connect issue.  I consider myself a new blogger and I am definitely technologically challenged so all the buzz about Google Friends Connect going away and join Linky Followers parties have my head spinning.   I found a blog, "The Real Blogger Status" that posted info about this matter on November, 23, 2011.  You can read it HERE.

Although this is a blogger blog, I am still confused about the Google Friends Connect vs Google Plus thing.  I did jump on the linky follower bandwagon but I found the dashboard to be difficult for me to use.  Also, I have learned that unlike GFC, you must upload your post into linky followers.  If you do not upload posts, followers do not know you have new material for them.

I did go to bloglovin and their dashboard is very similar to Bloggers'/GFC:  look, feel, logic.  It is also free and like GFC, bloglovin links up your posts automatically so your followers don't miss a single post.

I'd love to hear what everyone else is learning/has learned about GFC/Google+/Bloglovin/Linky Followers etc.

Making Your Own Dairy Products #1 - Make Your Own Yogurt

Okay, I just posted this earlier today and realized I have a few "homemade dairy products" ideas I'd like to try and share with you.  So, I've decided to host my first series, "Making Your Own Dairy Products".  There will be a new post every Saturday!  I hope you enjoy these as much as I do.  Now, to my original post for today!

In our house, we probably go through at least 2 quarts of yogurt each week. I like to purchase whole milk, non-homogenized yogurt when possible.  The challenge is that few groceries stock this type and they are not located locally!  Also, all those yogurt container are not recyclable in our area and I can only store so many for leftovers.  Solution...make my own and it super easy!  Do you own a crock pot, some canning jars (or some similar jars), a measuring cup, and a wisk?  Then you have all the tools you need to make  yogurt!  Here's how I do it!

Homemade Yogurt

Ingredients:
1/2 gallon milk (I used a non-homogenized local whole milk)
1/2 cup of yogurt with active cultures (dannon, seven stars, stonyfield, brown cow..check the label)

Optional Ingredients:
1/2 to 1 cup sweetener(s) of choice. (Cane sugar, honey, maple syrup, truvia, agave nectar, etc)
1 Tbsp vanilla extract

Equipment:
Crock pot (mine is a 5 qt)
Liquid measuring cup
Wisk
2 quart canning jars + 1 pint canning jar or equivalent w/lids
Old butter tub, frosting container, or small jar to hold 1/2 cup
Ladle or spoon
Towels

Instructions:
Gather your crock pot (make sure it is clean) and your milk

Pour your milk into the crock pot, put the lid on, and cook on low for 2.5 hours.  (I usually set my oven timer to remind me when time is up)

If you are going to add sweetener(s) and flavorings, you will add them at the end of the first 2.5 hours.

Note, with whole milk,  your yogurt is not as sour as when it is made with skim milk.  As a result, I do not add as much sweetener.  In my last batch I added 1/2 cup of organic cane sugar and 1 Tbsp of vanilla.

So, if you are adding sweetener/flavoring, measure it out, add it to your crock pot and wisk so it is thoroughly mixed in.

After you have mixed in your sweeteners/flavoring (or if you are making plain yogurt), with the lid on, turn your crock pot off and leave it sit for 2.5 hours (I will set my oven timer again)

Now, your milk is ready for you to add your yogurt culture/starter.

In you measuring cup, measure 1/2 cup yogurt with active cultures and add 1 cup of your warm milk (mixture) and wisk thoroughly.  Pour this into your crock pot and wisk thoroughly.  Replace the lid and let this sit while you get your jars ready.

Wash your 3 jars in as hot of water as you can stand and rinse well in HOT water.  You want your jars warm.

Now fill your warm jars with your warm milk/yogurt mixture and put their lids on.  Now you need to gather your towels so you can insulate your jars.  I placed a folded towel underneath the jars and then wrapped 3 towels over them.

Ugly,  I know.  Let your yogurt sit overnight (8-12 hours).  In the morning, look what you will have!

Now, I take 1/2 cup and place in a separate container labeled "yogurt starter" for my next batch.

Place these 3 jars and your starter in the refrigerator and chill for a minimum of 4 hours.  Enjoy!

Failure...I think not!

We are all amazing people with hopes, dreams, and desires.  All of us are out there learning and trying new things and then sharing our results with others.  We are giving, generous souls who put our hearts into everything.  At the end of the day, we often feel that we haven't succeeded:  we didn't get enough done, our project did not go as planned, we missed a deadline, etc.  We then tend to label these as "failures"....I think not.  They are all wonderful learning opportunities and successes in the making.  To keep you going, here's a list of some motivational quotes.

We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what we wil do, by finding out what we will not do.
- Samuel Smiles

Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.
-William Shakespeare

It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.
- Theodore Roosevelt

Only those who dare to fail greatly can achieve greatly.
-Robert F. Kennedy

Failure is an event, not a person.
- Edward de Bono

It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get back up.
- Vince Lombardi

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.
- Samuel Beckett

Our greatest glory is not in never falling but in rising every time we fall.
- Confucius

Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure.
-George Edward Woodberry

There are no mistakes or failures, only future lessons
- Denis Waitley

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try.
-Beverly Sills

It is imposible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not lived at all. In which case, you failed by default.
- J.K. Rowling

Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it.
- J.K. Rowling

If you have made mistakes, even serious one, there is always another chance for you. What we call failure is not the falling down but the staying down.
- Mary Pickford

So the next time you are trying something and getting frustrated at either the brain cramp you are having, the time you feel that is getting lost, the fact that what you have envisioned as success is not what is occurring...don't give up!  Everyone is cheering for you and is happy just to have you in their lives inspiring them to do the best that they can!
