When I was a kid, I remember getting these beautiful ornament making kits where you use pins to secure sequins and beads on a Styrofoam form. Remembering back, I thought I’d try something similar but use buttons and glass-head pins for a more whimsical look. Check it out!
It was easy and fun. This would be a great project for a older elementary aged child to do. Here’s how!
Button Ball Ornament
I first grabbed items that I thought I might use. I have some ribbon (for the hanging loop), two bags of 120 buttons, some extra-fine glass head pins (white), and some sequins (which I didn’t end up using).
First cut a piece of ribbon about 6 inches long. Loop the ribbon and secure it to your Styrofoam ball with a straight pin.
Then, using your glass-head pins, secure a button. through the button holes, onto the Styrofoam ball.
I found that the pink buttons (the smallest) fit nicely on top of the green buttons. Also, if you look at the blue button on the left, I first only used two pins but I thought the two “open” button holes made things look incomplete. So, I decided to put a pin through every button hole.
Continue attaching buttons to your Styrofoam ball until the entire ball is covered. Easy Peasy!
I can’t wait to show you tomorrow’s inspiration!

Hello from Maine!
Thank you so much for visiting my blog…I’m so glad I “hopped” over to see what you’ve been creating…I love this idea! I just recently acquired a whole tin of buttons…this will be a perfect way to use some of them! Many of them are white…I thought about getting some Christmassy colors (red, green, gold, silver, blue)spray paint and painting a bunch of them to make ornaments for the tree…what do you think? I’ll post a picture when I’m done.
Can’t wait to have a minute over a cup of tea by the woodstove to check out some more of your great ideas!
Have a blessed day!

Hi Marilyn, I love this. A great idea for all my buttons! I’m thinking Christmas and gifts. And as an added note, if you dip the pins in glue (like Alene’s) it becomes permanent and the pins don’t ever fall out.
Hope you are well. Everyonce in a while I make another ‘granny’ flower from the kit you sent me. Someday I’ll have enough for an afghan–or maybe I could stop at a wrap. lol Everyone loved the ‘Bee’ bag! Cathy

PS Dip the pins in the glue after it is ‘loaded’ with the button or ribbon.

What an idea! I especially love the idea of securing them with pins, since you that have filled the holes of the buttons. I don`t like leaving them empty, thanks for giving me the idea!
