Do you ever look at the labels of dairy products? Amazed to find that there are ingredients that you have no idea what they are or where they come from? How would you like to make sour cream at home with just 2 ingredients?
Yes, just take two ingredients, add some time and “viola!”… you have some of the best tasting sour cream! Here’s how.
Homemade Sour Cream
Ingredients:
1 cup heavy cream (try to get pasturized but NOT ULTRA-pasturized if possible)
1/4 cup buttermilk
Directions:
Measure your cream and buttermilk and place it in a jar. Mix.
Now take a paper towel, coffee filter, cheese cloth, or light weight cloth and drape it over your cream/buttermilk mixture. Place in a warm (NOT HOT) location for 12-24 hours. (My oven has a warm setting so I heated my oven to warm, turned it off, and placed my mixture in the oven overnight).
In the morning I had sour cream!
Cover and refrigerate! This will be the best tasting sour cream and should last a minimum of 1 week.
Notes:
- If your kitchen is cool it will take longer for the sour cream to set up. Your area needs to be at least 70 degrees F.
- If you do not have buttermilk, you can substitute the following
-
- Place 1/4 cup milk and 3/4 tsp of distilled vinegar in a bowl. Allow this to sit 10 minutes.
I hope you enjoy this! Also, I apologize for this post being 3 days late. I had a busy weekend and had scheduled this to post on Saturday, March 31, 2012. However, in my haste I must have selected “save now” rather than “publish post”.

This is such a great idea. I need to compile all your yogurt, cheese, and sour cream recipes and decide which one I want to do first. What recipe would you suggest I do first?
Thanks for your inspiration! Thanks for linking up at Romance on a Dime!!

I just made this and it is the best…I won’t buy sour cream i will make my own. I couldn’t find just pasteurized heavy cream so I did use the ultra pasteurized and my sour cream still turned out really good.
