A few months ago, our Goodwill store doubled in size. It is HUGE and I LOVE it! It seems that not only did the amount of merchandise double but the quality quadrupled. And it has very reasonable prices. I was in there last week and I picked up a small straw wreath for just $0.50 along with a (Miley Cyrus) canvas for $0.50. I forgot to take a before shot of the wreath but here’s the canvas.
And look at the back….there’s already string adhered so this can be hanged.
Now I am not a Miley Cyrus fan but I am a fan of getting something inexpensively. I thought I could put both items together to create something fun. Here’s how it turned out.
The supplies I used were all leftovers from other crafts. Here’s how I did this.
First I sanded the canvas. It has some sort of slick coating on it and it also had some glitter on the butterflies and the bottom.
Then I placed the canvas on cans (so it would be elevated and easier to paint). I painted two coats of espresso brown to cover up Miley. Then I painted a top coat of brown so it would be some what streaky looking. I topped everything off with a coat of polycrylic to seal it.
Next I wrapped the wreath with burlap strips and found a strip of leftover fabric from my sewing machine cover project to “hang” the wreath from the canvas. I laid the wreath on the canvas to determine how I wanted it to hang.
I then stapled the end of the fabric strip to the back of the canvas.
The butterflies (which were glittered) still shown through the brown paint so using spray adhesive I glued a piece of burlap onto the canvas to cover them. I also free hand cut out the word “fun” from some leftover felt and adhered these pieces with spray adhesive as well. I decided to add one felt pinwheel for a whimsical feel.
I just love a bargain!
