Well, when you last saw my lovely chair it had shed it’s pink exterior and now looks like this!
Sad to say that the chair still looks like that. However, there still has been progress, believe it or not. Here’s what’s been happening.
In my post dated 7 Jan 2012, I had a picture of the 4 fabrics my daughter and I picked out to use as our color scheme for my woman cave/craft room makeover. Our plan was to use one of those fabrics to reupholster the chair. After taking the old fabric off, we decided that our fashion fabric was probably not sturdy enough for the job and may actually tear during the reupholstering process. What were we going to do?
I have decided that this chair is my learning chair. This said, as long as I keep my costs down, I am going to throw caution to the wind and have fun (he he he he) This is a very liberating decision. So, here’s what we did.
I decided to go to our local hardware store and I purchased a 12′ x 15′ 8oz canvas drop cloth. The normal cost for this cloth is $37 but my husband has a discount account there so it was $30. It is a great weight for the chair. So, it was now time to cut out the pieces using my slavaged pink pieces.
To ensure I had all the pieces correctly cut out, I always placed all of my pink pieces face down when using them as a pattern. I then kept the new cut out piece with the old pink to hopefully make the reconstruction process a bit easier.
After cutting out the pieces, I thought again and an all off-white chair seemed somewhat boring and perhaps a huge dirt magnet. What to do? Well, inspiration came from our Michael’s sales flyer. They are having a dollar day sale this week and their acrylic paints are just 3/$1! Yes, $0.34/$0.33 each! You can purchase fabric medium add in for acrylic paint so ….eureka! We’ll paint a design on our fabric. We looked at our fashion fabrics and chose this one for inspiration.
We think these colors matched the circle colors pretty well! We also picked up 2 bottles of fabric medium (it was $0.99)
Okay, now for the fun! We took old butter tubs and mixed the acrylic paint with the fabric medium (following the instructions). Then we took paint brushes and made circles, dots, and more. (Note: The instructions say to work on top of waxed paper or something else in case the paint bleeds through. We just kept the canvas on top of the old pink fabric and used that as our buffer in case there was any bleed through).
Now, I am in hurry up and wait mode. The paint needs to dry/cure for 24-48 hours. Then it needs to be heat set with an iron. So, I have pieces of fabric laying around drying. Here’s one draped across my “naked” chair.
I probably won’t get to put the chair back together before this weekend! That’s okay. Works of art take time!

Well, aren’t you a clever little chicken? What a great idea. Who would’ve thought? You’ve got the best ideas Marilyn. I’m so looking forward to seeing the finished product.
