That ugly pink chair is soundly built but U-G-L-Y! My daughter and I decided to reupholster it rather than slip cover it. Since it was only a $15 chair from Goodwill, the cost will consist of some supplies but mainly time. I think this is going to be a wonderful learning opportunity.
Looking at various online “how to reupholster” sites and blogs, the first thing we need to do is take the chair apart. Everything says to be careful because you need to save all the fabric pieces to use as patterns pieces. Got it!
I think most people are hesitant to re-upholster an item because they are afraid of how it will turn out. Looking around, there are plenty of pictures included with instructions on how to actually reupholster but very little on how they actually took the chair/couch apart. So, I thought I’d share with you, today, our steps in taking our lovely pink chair apart! Here it goes.
Now, looking at the exposed back of and sides of the chair more closely, we see that there is a heavy string coming from batting tufts. Upon further examination, these are the strings that the buttons on the “front side” of the back were tied on with and the batting is what was added to ensure the buttons did not go all the way through. Next item to be dealt with!
Beneath the batting on the lower sides…look where some of the arm is attached!
It took about 6 hours to take all the fabric off the chair…as you can see I am trying to keep as much batting as possible on the chair. The tools we used include pliers, screw driver and 2 pocket knives.

I don’t know Marilyn. It’s not that bad. It will be a lot nicer when you’ve finished though. Can’t wait.

Wow! You are the second “person” I’ve read about this week who did an upholstery job. That is soo cool! I’ve wanted to delve into that but don’t have anywhere to do that right now. Look forward to seeing your progress! I’m stopping over from Romance on a Dime’s Take it on Tuesday Blog Hop. (And I’m a new follower)

I just passed up a chair at the thrift shop because I wasn’t sure how to get the fabric off. The fabric was only on the back and the seat – the rest was made of a wicker/weave type material. Just wasn’t sure how to get the fabric off the area against the back. Should have bought it and given it a try!
